Carpet Cleaning and allergies

Over the past 20 years or so allergies, such as asthma, have been causing more and more of us to experience those uncomfortable – and in the case of our children in particular – distressing symptoms of allergen sensitivity. It is now estimated that over 50% of children have some form of allergy, and unfortunately for the majority of them these symptoms will not be diagnosed until they are fully 'sensitised' - by which time the allergy could be with them for life. - Do You Recognise These Symptoms?
Most symptoms associated with allergies are so common we don’t even realise they are allergies Symptoms such as sneezing, wheezing, sinus pain, runny nose, coughing, rashes, swelling, itchy red eyes and sore throats can all indicate an underlying sensitivity to the allergens. This increase has been blamed on many things including the pollution in our environment. In particular pollution indoors, in our homes.
Until recently in this country, professional carpet and upholstery cleaning has been traditionally regarded as simply a cosmetic job to remove stains from years of wear and tear, and it has been carried out by untrained people with low-tech equipment.
Now, with improved knowledge and techniques gained from countries such as America, Canada and Australia the importance of cleaning for the benefit of the family's health has been recognised as being of vital importance.
Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Co. are acutely aware of these problems and are right at the forefront in addressing the situation.
Facts About Allergies
1. The British Allergy Foundation has described Asthma as “the most common chronic childhood medical condition.” However, no one has ever found a ‘cure’ for Asthma.
2. The number of Allergy Sufferers is growing dramatically in the UK. This has been blamed on hundreds of different reasons like pollution. If this was true why are there as many sufferers in the Highlands of Scotland as in the inner cities?
3. It is our children that suffer the most. Exposure of children in early years of life to allergens increases their risk of developing allergies. Establishing an allergy-friendly environment is the first step in avoiding common allergens and controlling allergies.
4. Millions of pounds are lost in production each year when people in offices become ‘ill’ with headaches tickly throat, runny nose and sore eyes etc…
5. We have scientific proof that is not just Asthma, rhinitis and eczema that are caused by the faeces of the Dust Mite – allergies can start as simply as a tickly cough, runny nose and sore eyes etc…
6. Some people will tell you to remove your carpets and vacuum with a conventional (bag or cyclone) cleaning machine. This is not correct advice. To transform your life you first need professional advice, professional ‘deep’ cleaning and carpet and upholstery protection.
7. Stainshield Professional™ is a unique new product that is clinically tested and proven to create an allergy-free home environment by safely removing the House Dust Mite from your mattress, carpets and upholstery. Stainshield Professional™ a Patented product, unlike most methods – it actually removes the mite, not just the food source and protects your furnishings from soil and stains.

The House Dust Mites (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) are microscopic (up to 0.3 mm) arthropod creatures related to ticks and spiders. Too small to be seen with the naked eye the mites are turtle shaped creatures with eight legs. They live on the decaying dead skin flakes in house dust – skin that we shed every day. There is hardly a house in the UK without them, although the number can vary between houses containing huge numbers, and others almost none.
The Mites survival does not only depend on the amount of dust, but very much on the amount of humidity in the house. Without continuous high humidity (50+rh) their skin will cause them to rapidly dehydrate. In these perfect conditions Dust Mites live for 3-4 months with females laying 25 to 50 eggs, with a new generation produced every three weeks!
It is not the Mite that we become allergic to, but ironically it’s the waste product from our skin that they digest. In fact it is the powerful protein enzymes the mites digest our skin with, in a similar way to most creatures.
Each mite will produce around 20 droppings per day everywhere they go. Each of these droppings holds around 10-12 sub pellets that are about 2-10 micron in size and contain their leftover enzymes.
THE SOLUTION
Prevention is better than cure. Cleaning of your carpets and upholstery by a fully trained and certificated professional on a regular scheduled basis will significantly reduce the risks that your family are subjected to. And, not only will Stainshield Professional protect against the effects of mites, but it also gives protection against most household soils and spills by creating a barrier and not allowing them to get a hold on your valuable carpets and furnishings.

Why Truckmounted Carpet Cleaning

Ultimate Truckmount Challenge

A truck mounted, carpet cleaning machine is the standard installation for Birmingham Cleaners. These machines supply dependable, industrial-strength vacuum and hot water delivery and recovery for effective steam or 'extraction' carpet cleaning. The ability to mount the equipment inside a carpet cleaning van makes for a highly mobile setup that is especially suited to bringing our carpet cleaning business to our clients place of residence or to a commercial business.

These truck mounted, cleaning machines are bolted to the floor of a Ford Transit van. They are powered by their own lpg driven engines and thus do not require any electrical energy from the customers residence. They are self-contained and can be moved into a different van if required. They are very expensive, but they provide a much higher standard of cleaning.

The most important advantage to truck mounted machines is cleaning power. Truck mounted systems use on board water and can heat it to over 220 F. The hotter water helps breakdown the dirt, soils and stains in the carpet and also improves the chemical action of the cleaning solution. Secondly, truck mounts are able to supply more powerful water pressure which will ensure your carpets are fully rinsed out and altogether free of any solution. Extra solution left on a carpet will cause it to get dirty faster. Lastly, the vacuum power of truck mounts is significantly greater than using portable machines. Better vacuum means improved extraction of dirt and soils and also, less residual water left behind so drying times are faster e.g. 2-4 hours vs. overnight for most portable cleaners.

Identifying carpet fibres

Identification of Carpet Fibre

Carpet is constructed out of different fibres. It can be either natural or artificial. When you purchase carpet you would like to know the material or the fibre of which it is manufactured. Knowing fibre is essential not only to judge its durability but also for its cleaning and spotting. Different cleaning methods are adopted for different types of fibres. For instance, for olefin fibres, chlorine bleach can be used. However, hot iron or carpet protector cannot be used for olefin. Fibre testing is simple and you can do it yourself.

Polypropylene If the fibre floats in water, it means it is olefin fibre. No testing kit is required. It’s simple. Are you ready? Ok, take a glass of water and add little detergent. Hold the fibre under the surface of the water, and squeeze out all the trapped air, and let go. In case the fibre floats, it is olefin. If you want to use chlorine bleach, test the fibre with the same, this is a nylon-olefin blend. When it is put to burn test, it melts and burns. It continues to burn even when it is withdrawn from the flame. The odour is that of a candle wax odour and it produces a tough, tan bead

Wool

The test of wool is very easy. If it is wet, it smells like a wet dog. There is another test namely the burn test. For this test use a butane lighter to melt or ignite an unknown fibre. This will help you in the determination of its types. Butane lighter avoids masking the odour of the burning fibre. Burned wool smells like burned hair. Moreover wool dissolves in undiluted chlorine bleach.

Acrylic

If the fibre is acrylic it will melt and shrink as soon as the flame comes into its proximity. The fibre burns with lot of smoke rapidly with bright, sputtering flame. Even after it has been withdrawn from the flame it continues to burn, melts, and drips. It has an acrid odour and results in a hard, irregular black bead.

Cellulose

Cellulose fibres just like cotton or silk, burns and the ash crumbles

Cotton/Linen:

Cotton or linen burn with the yellow flame as soon as they are ignited. Even when the fibres are pulled out, they continue to burn with a red afterglow upon extinguishing. Cotton or linen fibres smells like burning paper.

Nylon

Nylon burns with a smoky flame it melts and tends to self-extinguish. On burning it smells like celery or sealing wax. The burnt nylon is a hard, shiny brown or grey bead.

Polyester

Polyester too melts and shrinks from an approaching flame. It burns and melts slowly. Melting takes place in drips. While burning it smells sweet and produces a hard, shiny black or brown bead.

Protein

Protein fibres, burns easily and their ash crumbles - as do cellulose fibres such as cotton.

Rayon

Rayon burns rapidly with a blue flame. It continues to burn rapidly with a red afterglow when the flame is extinguished. Rayon smells like burning paper, leaves a grey to charcoal colour light feathery ash. Rayon cannot be wet cleaned!

Silk

When the flame approaches, silk curls away. It burns slowly and sputters. Weighted silk glows red. Out of the flame, it is self-extinguishing or may burn very slowly and smells like singed hair. Its residue is round, shiny black beads, easily crushed. Weighted silk has the skeleton of the original fibre.

Health Benefits of Carpet Cleaning

Health Benefits of Carpet Cleaning
Studies suggest that indoor air quality is often 10 to 100 times worse than outdoor air quality! Studies also show that there are many health benefits of carpet cleaning. As concerns grow to this regard it is more important for carpet cleaning companies to focus on health as well as appearance. When properly maintained, carpet can improve your health, indoor air quality and act as a filter holding soil, debris, and other contaminants, while preventing them from contaminating the quality of air. Truckmount cleaning

“The Worlds Most Powerful Carpet Cleaning System”
There is no other carpet cleaning system that can beat this……

Why?
Deeper, more thorough cleaning. Truck mounted systems are renowned for their power and speed of operation. In comparison truck mounted systems operate at around 400 - 500psi. Portable machines are around 50 - 100 psi with a ‘professional’ machine.

Quicker drying times. Due to the huge vacuum volume (or ‘air flow’ as we call it) truck mount cleaning dries at least 50% quicker than professional portable machines.

Healthier. The machine is kept outside your premises in our van, there is no dirty air blowing inside your house from the machines exhaust.

Fully self contained. With a truck mounted system we take all the dirty water away with us (we don’t put it …..
down your loo!) We provide all our own clean water (we don’t take from your sink!) and we use our own power (not yours). We carry out carpet cleaning jobs with no water supply and no electrical supply.

Better for your carpets. Due to the extra power of the truckmount we can use safer, milder carpet cleaning detergents, better for your carpet and the environment.

Carpet retailers only advise cleaning to be carried out with a truck mounted hot water extraction (steam) cleaning machine, but if truck mounts are so good why aren’t all carpet cleaning companies using them?

They are around 10 times more expensive to purchase than portables. Fortunately it will not cost you 10 times the price for your cleaning.

This system works best because……
It is a scientific fact that you need these 4 ingredients (chemical, heat, agitation and time) to clean anything effectively. If one of these ingredients is removed then the other three will have to be improved to counter balance this. It is a universally accepted principle and applies to washing your hands and clothes to buildings and if fact anything.

Chemical - Fact - The chemicals we use work better because with the training we have had the certifications we hold are not rivalled by any other company. We know what solutions work best on what type of fibre but also we know when not to use them as they can also cause irreversible damage which may not be noticed at the time but will mean the item will wear a lot faster than it would if it was treated correctly.

Heat - Fact - The truck mounted hot water extraction machine heats better because the temperature goes up higher than any other cleaning system available in the world. Most others only go to 60 degrees where as ours go to 220 degrees!! The solutions that are used improve performance by 10% with every temperature rise of 10 degrees.

Agitation - Fact - The truck mounted hot water extraction machine agitates better because the water pressure goes up higher than any other cleaning system available in the world. Most others only go to 70 psi where as ours go to 1000 psi!

Time - Fact - The time we allow for the solutions to work are as stated by the manufactures. We allow the correct time for the cleaning to be carried out. We won’t rush the job “in and out” get the job done as soon as possible attitude and apply the correct dwell times of the solutions.

Why should I buy leather?

Why should I buy leather?

Leather is the longest lasting and most durable upholstery material you can get–perfect for any room of your home or office. It is the strongest upholstery material known to man and will withstand the rigors of daily life, including children and pets. Although the initial investment of quality leather may be more than fabric upholstery, leather is actually your best value in the long run as it outlasts fabric 4 to 1.

How long will my leather sofa last?

With proper care, a quality leather sofa can be expected to last an average person's lifetime. Certain features become imperative when choosing an upholstery material that can last for decades. Look for zip access. Zips on the seat cushions and back bags insure you can refill your sofa. Leather can last decades, but seat cushion cores and back bag fill will not.

Which leather is right for me?

British Leather furniture is available in four distinctly different leather types: A, O, P and N. It’s important to know which type you have, so you can care for it properly.

Some leather types may incur minor surface marks that will disappear with use or by using Birmingham Carpet Cleaners Leather Conditioner.

Type A: Pure Aniline
• Little or no protective coating; shows all natural markings and character of the hide.
• Varies in shade and texture from panel to panel.
• Meant to age and gain a natural patina.
• Absorbs body oils, hair oils and certain food spills.
• Leather insurance recommended.

Type O: "Pull-Up" Leather
• A burst of colour is created when leather is pulled and/or stretched.
• Little or no protective coating; shows all natural markings and character of the hide.
• Varies in shade and texture from panel to panel.
• Meant to age and gain a natural patina.
• Absorbs body oils, hair oils and certain food spills.
• Leather insurance recommended.

Type P: Protected Leather
• A coated leather with variations in texture and natural markings; it is protected from most food and liquid spills.
• Varies in shade and texture from panel to panel.
• Leather insurance recommended.

Type N: Nu-buck
• A pure aniline product, abraded to create a suede-like nap with a soft feel.
• Little or no protective coating; shows all natural markings and character of the hide.
• Varies in shade and texture from panel to panel.
• Meant to age and gain a natural patina.
• Absorbs body oils, hair oils and certain food spills.
• Leather insurance recommended.

How do I care for my leather furniture?

To preserve the luxurious appearance of your Leather
furniture, please note these general tips:
• Take care not to mar the leather with sharp objects, including jewellery.
• Avoid long periods of exposure to sunlight or direct heat (including radiators, heating vents, windows, skylights and powerful lamps).
• Do not sit on the back or arms of your furniture. This can cause unwanted wear.
• Use only Birmingham Carpet Cleaners Leather care products.
• Do not use saddle soaps, ammonia based solutions, fairy liquid, baby wipes etc.

Recommended Cleaning & Conditioning Schedule:
When your new furniture arrives:
To assure longevity, we recommend applying Leather Protection & Conditioner.
Once a month (or as needed): Remove surface soil with a clean, damp cloth.
At least twice a year: Get your leather professionally cleaned, conditioned and protected.
More frequent care may be necessary in dry climates, when seating is located near a heat source or when seating receives heavy use.

What do all those fancy words mean?

ANILINE - Aniline is the type of dye used to give the initial colour to a hide. Aniline dying is the process of putting hides into a drum and allowing the dye to soak completely through the hide. Thus the phrase "aniline dyed all the way through" came to be.

ANILINE FINISH - Also known as full aniline leather, aniline finish leather is full grain leather which has been soaked in aniline dye, but does not have any subsequent pigmented or clear coat finishes applied.
Only the best hides which are relatively free from gross imperfections can be made into aniline finish leather. It is soft, pliable and considered the premier grade of leather.

BUFFING - This is a process used to minimize the appearance of gross surface imperfections such as wrinkles, parasitic damage or healed scars in the finished hide. This process makes the leather more uniform, but also obliterates the natural grain and markings that makes each hide unique and naturally beautiful.

CORRECTED GRAIN - Top grain leather that has been buffed or sanded to minimise imperfections in the hide.

DRUM DYED - A dying process accomplished by tumbling leather in a rotating drum to encourage the dye to penetrate fully.

EMBOSSING - To mechanically imprint unique grain effects under heat or high pressure in order to
smooth the grain or give a unique patterned look–ostrich, alligator, floral, etc. Top grain leather with excessive imperfections is often buffed smooth and then embossed with a grain pattern.

FINISHING - To make leather more durable, clear or pigmented substances are applied to the hide.
These provide abrasion and stain resistance, as well as colour enhancement. The finishing process usually involves three to four coating operations. Generally, the more finish a leather has, the stiffer it becomes. Semi-aniline leathers tend to be softer than heavily finished leathers, although this can largely be overcome by milling.

FULL GRAIN - Full grain leathers are top grain leathers that have not been corrected in any way, allowing the natural markings and character of the leather to show through. Full grain leathers are, therefore, much cleaner hides to begin with, have minimal scars, bug bites, urine burns, etc., which also make them more expensive than corrected grain leathers.

GRAIN - Markings or patterns on the leather surface. Naturally occurring grain is caused by wrinkles, markings and pores in the hide.

HAND - The softness or "'feel" of a leather is referred to as its hand.

HIDE - A raw or tanned pelt taken from a large adult animal. Cows, buffalo, sheep, goat and pig hides have been used to make upholstery leather. However, cows or steer hides are by far the most common.

LEATHER - A collective term used to describe any tanned animal skin.

MILLING - A natural softening process in which leather is tumbled in a drum.

MOTTLED FINISH - The result of blending closely related colours to achieve a more natural look.

NAKED LEATHER - Naked leather is a term used for a pure aniline dyed leather where no additional protective coats have been applied. It is the softest and richest looking leather available.
Naked leather gains a patina. Accepting body oils, it deepens in colour over the years, achieving a weathered appearance and rich glow.

NATURAL MARKINGS - These subtle markings on leather are the equivalent of a fingerprint.
They distinguish genuine leather from man-made materials. Other marks which can appear on the surface of leather are healed scratches, barbed wire marks, wrinkles, brands and insect bites.
Gross imperfections are normally cut out of the finished product.

NU-BUK LEATHER - Nu-buk is a full aniline product that has been abrased to create a slight suede type nap, resulting in a very soft hand.

PATINA - A lustre that naturally occurs as leather ages.

PROTECTED LEATHER - Protected aniline leather is less expensive and more common than full aniline or semi-aniline leather. Its coloration is more consistent and, because it has been coated with protective pigments, the leather's natural markings are less noticeable. These protected leathers are more heavily pigmented than semi-aniline leather, and are easier to clean than pure leather because surface pigments repel water and stains…standing up well to heavy use.

PULL UP - Pull up leather is one that when pulled tight produces a burst of color. Used as an upholstery leather, it gives a worn weathered appearance or a distressed look. Pull ups are full aniline leathers that have an oil and/or wax application. When the leather is pulled, the oil and/or wax separates causing the color to become lighter.

FULL ANILINE - Leather that has been aniline dyed but has not been coated any type of finish. It shows all the natural markings and character of the hide.

SAVAGE - A two-toned effect which adds depth to the leather.

SEMI-ANILINE DYED - The term used to describe aniline dyed leather which has only a small amount of clear or pigmented finish. It is a premium product which allows the hide’s natural character to show through.

SPLIT GRAIN - The term refers to the underneath layers of the hide which have been "split" off from the top grain. Splits are buffed, sanded and embossed to look like top grain leather. Split hides are stiffer than top grain leathers. They are used on less expensive furniture and will not be as long lasting or durable as top grain leather.

TOP GRAIN - Leather which contains the top portion of the hide…the part that had hair on it. Top grain leather can be full grain or corrected grain leather. The top grain portion of the hide is approximately 3/64" (about the thickness of a penny).

Restaurant carpet cleaning

When we all dine out, we expect to enter a restaurant and see clean floors. For restaurants with carpets, maintaining a clean floor is more challenging; but, still possible.

Birmingham Carpet Cleaners offer professional carpet cleaning services to businesses and commercial properties of nearly any industry, especially for those in the food service industry. Carpet cleaning is not only necessary, but an essential part of your operations.

Everybody has their favourite restaurants that serve their favourite dishes. Sensational food, aromas, and good hospitality are natural aspects of the dining experience. We expect our taste buds to be instantly energised from the delicious aroma in the air, yet our eyes don’t want to look down at the spotty, filthy looking carpet beneath our feet.
Restaurant owners beware! Customers don’t want to eat somewhere where the carpets are black and sticky! Carpets emitting a pungent aroma that overcasts the house specials aroma is not what the customer wants or expects. Why would anyone want to eat at your restaurant if dirt and grime are prevalent in the carpet? The answer is that they wouldn’t!

It's important for restaurants to clean their carpets regularly. Vacuuming alone is not enough when running any high traffic business, nor is it sufficient when running a restaurant. Customers may think less of your restaurant if it looks like the floor of a truck stop.

Remember that in any restaurant setting many air pollutants from the kitchen flood your dining area and eventually fall to the floor. These pollutants are then absorbed by the carpet. Grease, herbs, and spices all permeate through the air and end up in the carpet.

Let’s not forget the spilled fizzy drinks, coffee, wine and beer. What a mess! In any restaurant setting those accidents add up very quickly into a pungent mess.

Restaurant carpets are guaranteed to lose their lustre as soon the restaurant opens for business. Lacklustre carpets get attention by customers, the WRONG attention!

Another high traffic aspect of your dining facility is the upholstery that patrons might be sitting on too. Sweat, grime, mildew, and food pollutants build up rapidly on upholstery. Never forget to have your carpet cleaning service provider tend to your upholstery.

Any business owner in the Midlands always has a helping hand in cleaning their carpets.Birmingham Carpet Cleaners are the premier carpet cleaning service in the Birmingham area that has the best carpet cleaning solutions for you. Not only can Birmingham Carpet Cleaners clean carpets and upholstery, we even clean tile and grout!

Show your customers the brighter side of your brand with clean floors. Whether you have dull, stained carpet or need lounge sofas cleaned and treated our professional services achieve the fresh look your brand requires with economical pricing.

Keep your customers coming back for seconds… and thirds… and…

Scrape up the solids. Blot up the liquids, taking plenty of time. It is worth the effort. Mix the solution accurately. Test it on an out of the way piece of carpet. Always work from the outer edge of the stain to the centre.
NEVER OVER WET. Dab rather than scrub and never rub hard. Even though you do not completely remove the stain, the correct routine will give your professional cleaner, when called, the best possible chance of success.
Final Rinse Procedure
This rinse procedure is applicable to all the above methods of stain removal. Simply mix one part white vinegar and four parts water. Pour mixture into spray bottle and spay over the stained area. Blot dampened area (do not rub) to remove excess moisture. Spread white kitchen towel (stacked 6-8 sheets deep) over the affected area and a place a weight, such as a book, directly on top. This will help the moisture residue to soak into the towels. Leave overnight and repeat if necessary
NOTE: Some new carpets have been subjected to anti-static and soil resistant treatments. Even when these have been applied, it is wise to follow the stain removal procedures suggested.

When you have done all this, if you still have a problem give us a call and we will send one of our highly skilled and professionally trained technicians around to help you.

Stain removal guide - Copier Toner

Removing copier toner from your office carpet
Tools & Chemicals:
Dry cleaning solvent, dish washing or fine fabric detergent, white terry towels, white vinegar, warm water, measuring cup, vacuum. Dry cleaning solvents can be purchased at your supermarket or at your local carpet cleaning supply retailer.

Technique:

Work on removing the stain as soon as you notice it. The longer the stain is left on the carpet the greater the chances are of the stain setting and becoming permanent.

In every case remove all excess wet or dry material before attempting to clean. Blot wet materials using a white terry towel (check helpful hints for a detailed description of blotting). Vacuum excess dry materials or gently scrape up materials with a spoon.

Apply a small amount of dry cleaning solvent to the white terry towel and blot the stain. Continue until no further transfer of material to the towel is apparent.

If the stain remains proceed to the next step.

Mix 1/2 tsp. of dish washing soap or fine fabric detergent into 1 (8 oz.)cup of warm water.

Apply a small amount, blot or tamp and repeat until the stain is removed. Be patient. Complete removal may require repeating the same step several times. Tamp down on the carpet; do not scrub as this may distort the texture of the pile.

Cover the stain with the towel and press down repeatedly to absorb the stain material and detergent.

Once the stain is completely removed, rinse the area by spraying with cold water; blot with a dry white terry towel until all moisture is removed. Repeat this process several times to remove cleaning solution residue. (Residue can attract soils).

If the spot or stain turns brownish when dry, mix 1 part white vinegar and two parts water. Apply a small amount and blot. Repeat only once.

Precautions:
Never use a stronger concentration than is recommended. Never use laundry detergent or automatic dish washing detergents because they may destroy or dye some fibres. Never use non-volatile solvents as they can cause delamination in synthetic carpets either immediately or over a period of time. Non-volatile solvents do not dissipate at room temperature & will remain in your carpet. Never pour solvents directly onto your carpet or saturate your carpet. Instead apply the solvent to a white terry towel and blot the stained area. Never use highly combustible solvents such as petrol or paint thinners.

If you cannot remove the staining or would rather not attempt it in the first place then give us a call and we will send one of our trained technicians to do it for you.

Soil Filtration Lines

Found in many homes and some commercial settings - those mainly in colder areas - filtration soiling is tough to remove and takes time to do so properly.

Most carpet cleaning companies charge more for this type of service.

Filtration lines (soiling) are those dark lines or bands of soils that you find along walls, under doors that are kept closed for a length of time, under the skirting of furniture, and along the carpet edge where a poor fitter has pierced the underlay.

Its makeup is oily and the molecules of the soils are so small that cleaning them or removing them from fibres is difficult. In addition, they have an electrical "charge" that bonds them firmly to the fibre.

How they form

Filtration lines occur no matter what type of home, business or facility you are at

What matters: Indoor air quality and the construction.

As everyone knows, warm air moves up, and as it cools, drops back down. That's why hot air balloons defy gravity.

Something that not everyone knows is that warm air also likes cool surfaces.

This means that as air is warmed, typically while the central heating is on, the air - full of pollutants - goes up and then searches out cooler surfaces, such as an outside wall or another room.

As the air moves toward the cooler area, it will push its way through carpeted surfaces (under doors, etc) and "clean itself".

Just as carpet is a filter, it is much more so when air moves from one room to another, or when air moves under furniture, etc.

What is left behind is a build up of oily soils that are very difficult to remove.

As more time passes, more soils build up and soon you have a tremendous cleaning challenge.

What can you do? Call in the professionals who will know how to deal with such problems.

As with any cleaning challenge, they should attempt cleaning a dirty area with their normal cleaning protocol.

With filtration soils, it's the same thing. They will precondition a small area of filtration soils, work into the pile, and rinse.

Most likely, you will see little to moderate improvement.

This means they need to get aggressive with their cleaning procedure.

To prepare for successful cleaning of filtration soiling, they will need a moderate to stiff agitation brush or scraper (remembering that tamping is always the safest way to agitate fibres), a gel solvent, and a strong oxygen cleaner (either powdered or liquid).

Getting to work

A good cleaning procedure to begin with to remove filtration soils is vacuuming:

They should then follow this procedure:
Apply a preconditioner to the filtration soils
Agitate into the filtration soils (tamping or carefully scrubbing)
Rinse
Apply a gel solvent
Agitate
Rinse
Repeat if necessary (all steps)
The use of encapsulation chemistry is effective on filtration soiling. The chemistry encapsulates the smaller soils, making for easier removal.

That's one of the main challenges of filtration soiling - the tiny soils. Any chemical that will strip these from the fibre is a good choice.

Formulated soil filtration products from a cleaning supplier often have the ability to break the particle "charge" of the filtration soil and the fabric.

Challenges

Probably the biggest challenge to removing soil filtration lines is where they are on the carpet.

Although about one-third of soil filtration lines are under doors kept closed most of the time, the other two-thirds are in areas very difficult to work on.

Many filtration soils are along walls that go up or down a set of staircase, or along the skirting boards of walls.

Imagine the difficulty attempting proper agitation against walls that you do not want to harm.

Better scenarios

By now, you are wondering why they would want to attempt removing filtration soiling.

Here are some additional steps they can take, after regular extraction techniques fail.

With a flip-top bottle, they can apply a gel solvent to the filtration lines (the use of a gel solvent is safer as it doesn't have a high risk of creating delamination)
To protect the wall or baseboard, use a "shim" of some kind - this can be a piece of wood, plastic, or cardboard that will protect the wall or skirting board
They will then work the solution with as much agitation they can use with the particular fibre they are cleaning (a bone or plastic spatula or small brush works fine)
Before rinsing, they then apply a strong solution of hydrogen peroxide(do not attempt this yourself), always remembering that natural fibres need special care (for synthetic fibres, they will accelerate the peroxide solution with a few drops of ammonia)
They will then need to agitate the chemicals on the fibre and let them mix and dwell for several minutes
After a suitable dwell time they will have to rinse, but have to keep the shim close to the wall or baseboard, in order to avoid harming the wall or skirting board
They will repeat as necessary, allowing the peroxide solution more time for a better chemical reaction

How they begin
The best way to remove challenging spots or stains like this is to think of how they became a problem in the first place.

Filtration soiling is a heavy combination of soot, petroleum soils and other contaminants that find their way to concentrated areas of carpeting and, sometimes, furniture.

The challenge is to match up the cleaning agent and technique to the type of soil.

Filtration soils build up over a long period of time, which means that you need a strong cleaning protocol to remove these soils.

This often means: Solvent, strong oxidizer, and lots of agitation. Hard to do in confined areas, but still the best solution.

Remember, please do not try and remove soil filtration lines yourself. Give us a call and we will do whatever is needed to get rid of them. Cal 0121 311 1893

Maintaining your fabric upholstery

One of the most damaging effects to these types of fabrics is perspiration that builds up on the arms and often on the rear cushions where the head rests. Hair oils and greases can cause severe damage over a relatively short time. Colour can be affected and the fibres themselves be weakened. All fabrics should be kept out of direct sunlight for this can cause fading of the colours and weakening of fibres.

Some of the darker colours (blues, reds, greens, terracotta's) can lose colour through, what is known as, wear abrasion. That is the continual rubbing of clothing on the fabric during normal use.

There is a British Standard test (Crock Test), which is designed to determine whether the fabric meets certain standards.

The situation often arises where a professional cleaning technician visits a home to deal with a stain or clean a piece of furniture and has to refuse to do the work. This is usually because damage has already occurred through the owner trying to remove a stain, often by water on a damp cloth. A professional cleaning technician will carry out various tests to determine the fabrics suitability to each cleaning process.

Rather than try to ‘do it yourself’ and damage the item further it is far more cost effective to have it professionally cleaned so contact us first by calling 0121 311 1893 or book online

Why Should I Clean & Protect My Leather?
•Atmospheric Soils - Dust which builds up on a coffee table or desk over a time period will also deposit on your leather upholstery and leather suite. Additionally, consider the airborne cooking oils and atmospheric pollution that are present, to some degree, in every home. All these elements can wear down leather finishes.
•Common Soils - Soils such as dirt tracked in from outside, together with sand and fibres from plants, brought into the home by people and pets.
•Dyes and Inks - Denim dyes and newspapers inks can transfer onto leather upholstery in a process called dye transfer. A pen that leaks or your little loved one learning how to draw, can cause problems.
•Oils & Grease - Humans and animal body oils attach and hold on to leather furniture. These are easily transferred to the head cushions and armrests of your treasured leather armchair or leather suite and can cause serious damage to the protective finishes found on leather upholstery.
How Often Should I Clean My Leather?
A regular leather upholstery cleaning schedule includes professional cleaning twice a year is recommended.

Why choose carpet for your home

The House Dustmite

Why Choose Carpet for Your Home?

With its many styles, textures and types of construction, carpet is the right choice for everyone, from first-time homeowners, to retirees, to families with kids and pets. Plus, carpet will maintain its beauty and durability for many years when it is properly chosen, installed and cleaned. Carpet actually improves indoor air quality.
Selecting the right style and fibre is key to carpet durability. Know what to look for and choose carpet that fits the traffic pattern of your household.

What to Look For….
Today’s carpet offers a wide variety of choices in style, fibre composition and colour. Gone are the days of having to select only conventional loop pile, a carpet style consisting of yarn in uncut loops. New technology can produce multilevel loop and cut-loop patterns allowing diamond, bow, pin dot or fleur-de-lis designs that “pop out” in sculptured effects.

The texture, colours and pattern of the carpet can complement or contrast with patterns of your furniture and window treatments. Using a solid colour, textured carpet is a great way to provide interest and pizzazz, without going to a multicolour, overall pattern. Textured styles also fit well with today’s active and casual lifestyles.

To select the best carpet for your home and lifestyle, you should consider:

• Carpet and Rug Construction
• Colour
• Quality and Performance Requirements
• Selecting the Right Underlay
• Insulation
• Special Considerations (Seniors, children, Pets)

Clean and Green
The products used for cleaning are equally as important as your choice of floorcoverings and The Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Company only use Woolsafe approved products which not only clean well but they are friendly to both the indoor and outdoor environments. Our commercial heap filtration vacuums help improve indoor air quality because they keep dirt and dust that is suctioned up within the machines.

Carpet helps improve indoor air quality by trapping allergens, which can be removed through proper vacuuming with industry approved equipment... Helping Improve Indoor Air Quality. Carpet can be wrongly blamed for contributing to asthma and allergy and for emitting high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Studies have shown that carpet is better at trapping allergens than hard surface, such as tile or hardwood, because carpet fibres catch particles and allergens that fall to the floor. When allergens are trapped in the carpet, they cannot circulate in the air for you to breathe. Proper cleaning with a HEPA filtration vacuum effectively sucks up the dirt and dust from the carpet, locks it in the machine and keeps it out of the air.

New carpet may also have a “new carpet smell.” Scientific studies show that new carpet is one of the lowest emitters of VOCs into the indoor environment. In fact, carpet emits less VOCs than other products such as paint. Further, these emissions clear very quickly. The low-level VOC emissions and the harmless odour from new carpet dissipate within the first 48 to 72 hours after installation — even sooner with open windows or doors.

Your carpet is effectively the filter to your home and if you keep that filter clean then your Indoor Air Quality will remain good, but if you let the filter become full then all the pollens, bacteria and pollutants that would normally be trapped by your carpet will just bounce around in the air for you to breath in, just as if you had hard floors.

Your carpets should be cleaned a minimum of every 12 months, more often if you have pets or children.

Stain removal tips

Pet Stains on Carpet

Our technicians at The Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Company are specially trained to locate all pet stains with high power ultra violet lamps. Infected areas are specially treated and removed during our cleaning process.

It is not unusual for homeowners who have household pets to have urine stains on their carpet. Pets will urinate on carpet as an act of territorialism, anxiety, or simply out of need. If your dog is not neutered, they will pee on everything and anything - including all furniture, curtains, shoes, and handbags in your house.

The colour of pet urine and its staining potential will often depend on dietary habits and the age of the pet. Foods high in protein tend to produce a darker, more pungent and acidic urine. Foods higher in carbohydrates, such as corn or oats, produces more alkaline urine that is less likely to stain carpet and does not produce as potent an odour. Typically, because cat diets are richer in protein than dog diets, their urine will produce harsher odours and are more likely to cause stains.

Another consideration is the age of the pet. The older the pet the more renal function diminishes, thus producing urine that contains more plasma proteins. Because less uric acid is secreted in this urine it is less likely to stain a carpet; however, it will produce an even stronger odour. In almost all cases cat urine is the worst perpetrator for pet stains.

What Can I Do Myself, Before Calling A Professional?

Stains that have appeared within a couple of hours can often be cleaned with good success. This can be accomplished by using a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water, followed by blotting with water only. Apply using a spray bottle. After this, absorb the spot with clean colourfast towels until it is as dry as possible. Next, place a one-half inch thick weighted layer of colourfast (white) towels over the spot and let it sit overnight. This final procedure must not be overlooked, since crystallized urine residues left in the carpet are capable of reproducing odours during the warmer more humid months. Older urine stains often require replacement of the carpet and underlay in the affected areas and can also necessitate cleaning the sub floor with a disinfectant. Our company has fully trained technicians we can recommend that perform this service as well.

Pet Vomit Stains!

Like urine, the effectiveness of cleaning vomit is based on expediency. The first step is to scrape up as much of the matter as possible.

Next, it is important to elevate the pH of the stained area. This should be accomplished by blotting using a solution of one part non-foaming ammonia to five parts water, followed with blotting with a damp towel until the spot is as dry as possible. Again, it is also recommended that you place a weighted layer of white towels folded one-half inch thick over the spot and allow it to sit overnight to allow residual matter to wick up into the towel.
Spills and Stains

Soot and graphite
1.Vacuum, using crevice tool of vacuum cleaner to remove the soot. If all, or most, of the soot has not been removed, call us at The Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Company. We have powerful vacuums to accomplish this. If vacuuming has removed all particles go to the next step
2.Remove as much of the foreign material as possible by blotting with a white paper towel or scraping with a dull knife.
3.Apply isopropyl rubbing alcohol to a clean white cloth, white paper towel or cotton ball. If the spot extends deep into the pile use a blotting motion until the spot is removed or no colour is transferred to the cloth. Do not allow the alcohol to penetrate into the backing as this will destroy the latex bond. If the spot is on the surface only, rub in one direction at a time. Never use a circular motion to remove the spot as this may destroy the texture. Stop if spot is removed. If not, go to the next step.
4.Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. (To make the detergent solution mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dish washing detergent which does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 litre of water. Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If spot is being removed continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until spot is removed.
5.Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture.
If the spot is still present, keep the area moist with a clean white wet cloth to prevent the area from drying. Call The Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Company for a 100% guaranteed professional cleaning any time on 0121 311 1893

Berries
1. Remove as much of the spill as possible by blotting with white paper towels or scraping with a dull knife. A wet vacuum is useful if a large quantity of liquid was spilled. If spot has dried, saturate the tufts in the affected area with tap water (do not over wet). Allow to remain for about 1 minute and blot. If the spot is being removed using water, continue until the spot is completely removed. Blot dry and apply the paper towels and brick. If it is not completely removed go to the next step.
2. Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot.
3.Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture.
4.Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.
If the spot is still present, keep the area moist with a clean white wet cloth to prevent the area from drying. Call The Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Company for a 100% guaranteed professional cleaning any time on 0121 311 1893

Candle Wax
1. Spread brown paper (such as grocery bag) or a terry cloth towel over the area and iron with the setting on warm." The wax will be absorbed into the paper or towel.
2. Remove any traces with alcohol or dry cleaning fluid. Never pour product directly on carpet. Pour on clean white cloth and work in to fibres.
If the spot is still present, keep the area moist with a clean white wet cloth to prevent the area from drying. Call The Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Company for a 100% guaranteed professional cleaning any time on 0121 311 1893

Chewing Gum
1. Freeze the gum using an ice cube.
2. Shatter the frozen gum with a knife handle and vacuum.
3. Some citrus based products have been demonstrated to break down the stickiness of gum so that it can be removed. Never pour product directly on carpet. Pour on clean white cloth and work in to fibres.
4. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture. Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.
If the spot is still present, keep the area moist with a clean white wet cloth to prevent the area from drying. Call The Birmingham Carpet Cleaning Company for a 100% guaranteed professional cleaning any time on 0121 311 1893
